Inexpensive Set Contruction tips and ideas
Trixter on theforce.net fan films boards posted the following suggestions for low cost set construction tips and secrets:
1st Check construction sites in your area, they throw away TONS of usable stuff for building sets and such, wood, cardboard, misc. pieces of construction materials.
Most places don't care if you raid their trash cans cause they have to pay to ship it all away, the less they have to haul out, the cheaper it is for them.
**** Always check with the foreman on the site before you do this. You might get more that what you were going after****
2nd Check to see if your county or city has a hazardous waste disposal place, I know this sounds funny but we have a location like that here. Its where you can deposit all those things you cant throw away. Stuff like car batteries, cleaners, paint, stuff like that. Now here in Colorado they open the doors twice a week for people to PICK UP any usable items they may have. Last time I went there I was able to pick up 20 gallons of gray primer, were still using it as a base-coat for most of our sets. Check it out, see what you can get.
3rd See about houses undergoing remodeling, you would be surprised what they throw out of a house. Carpet, cabinets, stuff like that.
4th Check around to companies that haul away and trash stuff like trailer houses, RVs, and similar. Lets not forget your local salvage yards either. Most stuff you can haul out of there for dollars on the pound unless they fit a specific category, then still their prices aren't that bad.
And finally, check with family, friends, garage sales, flea markets, and auction houses. Lots of usable stuff if you have the place to store it.
